Food: Five Spice Gingersnaps

Five-Spice Gingersnaps

Here's a recipe for the cookies that I made last year for Christmas! They're tons of fun to make and taste good as well!

yield: Makes about 3 dozen cookies
active time: 1 hr
total time: 10 hr

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 3/4 teaspoons Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons finely chopped crystallized ginger
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup Lyle's Golden Syrup
  • 1 1/2 sticks (3/4 cup) unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 1 large egg

  • Special equipment: parchment paper; a 2 1/2-inch round cookie cutter; a piping tip with a 1/4-inch plain round opening (if making cookies into ornaments); pastry bags or several small heavy-duty sealable plastic bags (optional)

  • Garnish: decorative icing (optional).

Dicrections

Make dough:
Whisk together flour, five-spice powder, baking soda, and salt in a small bowl.
Pulse ginger with 1/4 cup sugar in a food processor until finely ground.
Add syrup, butter, egg, and remaining 3/4 cup sugar to processor and blend until mixture is thick and creamy, about 3 minutes. Add flour mixture and pulse just until a dough forms. Form dough into a disk and chill, wrapped in plastic wrap, at least 8 hours to allow flavors to develop.
Bake and ice cookies:
Put oven rack in middle position and preheat oven to 325°F. Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper.
Quarter dough. Keeping remaining 3 pieces wrapped in plastic wrap and chilled, roll out 1 piece of dough on a lightly floured sheet of wax paper with a lightly floured rolling pin to 3/4 inch thick. (If dough becomes too soft to roll out, chill on wax paper until firm.) Cut out rounds with cutter and transfer to 1 lined baking sheet, arranging cookies about 2 inches apart.
Bake cookies until slightly puffed and a shade darker, 10 to 12 minutes. Cool 5 minutes on sheet. If desired, make holes with piping tip near edges to hang cookies, then transfer cookies (still on parchment) to a rack to cool completely. (Cookies will flatten slightly as they cool.)
While first batch is baking, roll out and cut another batch, arranging cookies on second lined sheet. Bake in same manner, then gather scraps and chill until dough is firm enough to reroll, 15 to 20 minutes. Make more cookies with scraps (reroll scraps only once) and remaining pieces of dough, cooling sheets and lining them with fresh parchment before using.
If using icing and coloring it, transfer small batches of icing to small bowls, 1 for each color, and tint with food coloring. Spoon each color of icing into a separate pastry bag, pressing out excess air. Twist bag firmly just above icing, then decoratively pipe icing onto cookies. Let icing dry completely (about 1 hour, depending on humidity) before serving or storing cookies.
Cooks' notes:•Cookies are best when dough is chilled 8 hours to allow flavors to develop, but if you're in a hurry, dough can be chilled just 2 hours. Dough can be chilled up to 3 days.
•Using a pastry bag fitted with a piping tip results in cleaner lines of icing, but you can use small sealable plastic bags. Spoon each color of icing into a separate sealable bag, pressing out excess air, and snip an 3/4-inch opening in 1 bottom corner of each bag.
•Cookies keep, layered between sheets of parchment if iced, in an airtight container at room temperature 5 days.

DIY: Felt Garland

Here's a cool DIY I found on Poppytalk the other day. This was made with a Thanksgiving theme but you can easily change it to fit any occasion! Click here to get your personal message written out in the same font! This is a great DIY and only took about twenty minutes for me to put together!

Here's what you'll need:

Step 1: Print out your letters.

Step 2: Roughly trim around them and pin them onto your felt and cut each letter out.

This font is so easy to use as it requires no precision cutting to look great.

When you've finished cutting you will have all of these beautiful, colourful letters ready to sew.

Step 3:  Pin your letters onto your bias binding.

You could use a ruler here to make sure they are the same distance apart. I freestyled it and the garland turned out fine.

Step 4: Sew your letters onto your binding and you're done!

Seasonal Bedecking: Halloween Pumpkins

Here's a whole new list of ideas on how to spook your trick or treaters! I found some pretty creative ways to decorate your home or garden this Halloween! Check out the pictures below!

I love this idea of melting wax onto the pumpkins! It's also a great way to use those old crayons in the back of the drawer!

If any of you have little children this would be a great after school project that they would really get a kick out of making!

These pumpkins are little more polished than the others, also less labor as you don't have to take the seeds out and all you need is some glue and ribbons!

This is a great way to fill up your hearth for the season! I love the idea of this and its a great way to decorate your home for the holidays!

I love the idea of painting on a pumpkin, it's a lot less messy and can have just as pretty as an effect! If you want to turn your pumpkin into a vase come to Christoffers! We even sell these beautiful Chinese Lantern Flowers!

Celebrate: Kids Halloween Party Games

With Halloween just around the corner it's the perfect time to start planning a party for your children. This is also a great idea for Party Moms this month, if you're having trouble thinking of activities for your child's class this is a great place to get some inspiration! Here are some great games that I found on the Martha Stewart website!

This activity is probably my favorite, click here for more details!

If you're planning on doing this activity I'd recommend the cinnamon doughnuts at your local farmer's market, they're always the best!

Seasonal Bedecking: Easter Tiered Floral Arrangement

Having trouble deciding on a centerpiece this Easter? Here is a great idea that I picked up at Martha Stewart's website. Instead of having one large arrangement in the center have lots of little tiny ones, either put them on a tiered platter like in the photo below or have them scattered down the middle!

Valentines Day Garlands

One of my favorite holidays to decorate the house for is Valentine's Day, one of the things always around the house during this time is garland, here are some ideas to help you get in the spirit!
Found on Real Simple
What you need:
Assorted Paper
Needle and Thread
2” Scalloped Shaped Hole Punch

  1. Fold 3” to 6” paper squares in half and cut a half heart from the fold.
  2. Thread needle and string hearts together through the top center of the folded paper hearts.
  3. Using scalloped hole punch, make shapes from paper. Thread needle and string through the opposite sides of each scalloped paper.
  4. Add as many hearts and scallops as it takes to raech your desired length.

If you don't feel like making your own you can buy this burlap pennant garland on Etsy!

This is a great way to use all those scraps of fabric you weren't sure how to use! Click here to see the full directions!

Christmas Garland

Every Christmas I always help my grandmother decorate her house, I have to say I was quite proud of the end result this year. I was lucky enough to get all the silk garland from Christoffers, along with the silk red berries. The large ornament hanging from the wreath is a few years old but also from Christoffers. It's always great to have real garland, but I will be the first to admit it's nice not having it shed everywhere, along with the fact that you only have to purchase the garland once, and it lasts you many years to come! And if you find yourself missing the pine smell that comes along with the real thing just buy some of the pine scented candles from Christoffers!

Holiday Bedecking: Lightbulb Vase

It's inevitable, every year you open that box of christmas lights to find that they no longer work. Instead of throwing out the now useless bulbs, use them in a whole new "light"! Make a centerpiece by filling a large glass vase with the bulbs, you could even try this with ornaments!
